Morbus Basedow

Both eyes are pushed forward and appear bigger.

This disease is also called endocrinal orbitopathy, since diseases of the thyroid gland cause inflammable alterations of the tissue in the orbits.

The upper and lower eyelids are pressed apart by protrusion of the eyes.

This mounts up into problems of the closure of the eyelids and has also other consequences: “dry eyes”, keratopathy, worsening of the view and aesthetical problems etc... In addition to this, diplopic images, ocular hypertension and other eye problems can occur.

An adequate treatment postulates an endocrinological, surgical and ophthalmologic cooperation. Oculoplastic surgery can be applied to reduce the width of the palpebral fissure.
