Sebaceous Gland Carcinoma

Advanced carcinoma of the sebaceous gland.

The carcinoma of the sebaceous glands of the eyelids is a rare and malignant tumour. At the beginning there is a slight redness and swelling of the upper eyelid which is often mistaken for a hordeolum or chalazion.

In general, a peri-ocular form is differed from an extra-ocular form. The prognosis of the peri-ocular form is more unfavourable because of the danger of metastases.

The carcinoma of the sebaceous glands is at first inconspicuously painless but extends in the meantime by the building of metastases.

Therapeutically, a histological controlled and total surgical removement has to be carried out, which has to be followed by an oculoplastic reconstruction.
