Dermoid Cyst

Congenital, cystic tumour of the orbit, here during a resection.

Dermoids or cystic dermoids belong to the tumours of the germ cells. These tumors build out of germ cells tissue which is no typical for the affected region (hair, teeth, skin etc.). These are benign tumours.

In dependence of size and localization, a dermoid can lead to aesthetical and other problems.  Concerning the eyelid(s) a ptosis is quite often. Concerning the tear sac and the conjunctiva, mostly problems of secretion of tears or malfunctions of wetting develop.

If required, a surgical resection is possible. During resection, one has to look for an intact “cyst-capsule”,  for preventing post-surgical inflammations within the surgical area.
